Paul van der Sloot,
Paul van der Sloot, age 16, was born in Medicine Hat, AB, and currently lives in Calgary. He started studying cello at the age of 7 with John Kadz at the Mount Royal University Conservatory of Music. He is a student in the prestigious Performers’ Certificate Program at the Conservatory and also is one of the principal cellists for the Calgary Youth Orchestra. He has won many awards and scholarships ranging from local festivals, to provincial and national competitions. Some of his more outstanding prizes include winning 1st in both junior cello (2008) and intermediate cello (2010) at the provincial music festival, a 1st prize with his former chamber group in the senior level (2010) at the provincial music festival, and a 2nd prize with his chamber group at the internationally acclaimed Morningside Music Bridge program in the summer (2010). Paul has had master classes with some of the top cello teachers in North America, including Andrés Díaz, Ron Leonard, Laurence Lesser, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Desmond Hoebig, Norman Fischer, Lynn Harrell, and others. In Paul’s spare time, he is an avid sports fan, as well as being an offensive and defensive lineman on his high school football team, he downhill mountain bikes, and enjoys video games.
